Sheila Hylton's earliest exposure to music was through the record collection of her grandfather who was a jazz fan. As a young woman she listened to and absorbed the works of the greatest female jazz singers. She also listened to the post-independence Jamaican music that informed her vocal style and provided the sound-track to her life. This combination led to a vocal style that is very contemporary and yet versed in the nuances of the past. Sheila Hylton's earliest successful recording was a cover of Ebony's "Life In The Country". Excellent reviews led to Island Records signing her to their Mango label. Hylton then recorded a version of Sting's "The Bed's Too Big Without You" which charted in the UK. She has also worked as a model and actress.
